Regulation to help disabled travellers in Europe

0

The new law is set to help 15 million disabled travellersA new regulation for up to 15 million disabled travellers in Europe has come into effect.

Under the measures, airports in EU countries have to provide services to help disabled people to board, disembark and transfer between flights.

Transport minister, Rosie Winterton, said: "This is a major step in ensuring that disabled people and those with reduced mobility have the same access to the standards and services that everyone expects when they fly.

"We expect all airlines and airports to maintain these high standards and for strong action to be taken against anyone repeatedly breaking the regulations across Europe."

The Equalities and Human Rights Commission”s Baroness Jane Campbell, added: "People who previously daren”t risk flying for fear of problems can now confidently give it a try."

This is the second stage of measures to support disabled passengers flying through Europe.

Last year, it became illegal for airlines, travel agents or tour operators to refuse a holiday booking on the grounds of disability.

Holiday quarrels begin at age 11

0

Four in ten parents say children fight after the age of 11Squabbles and tantrums on holiday begin when children reach the age of 11, new research has suggested.

A survey by Ocean Village revealed that 40 per cent of parents said they saw an increase in holiday arguments from that age, Travel Weekly reports.

Meanwhile, a quarter of children questioned said they find family holidays boring because they are prevented from pursuing their own interests.

As a result, parents are beginning to involve their children in planning the family holiday to help ease the stress.

Commenting, Ocean Village head of marketing communications, Gill Haynes, said: "Our research shows the increasing importance of the family holiday as a way to re-establish family bonds, not only amongst the generations, but also between parents and children.

"This means that the requirements of an average family holiday are becoming increasingly complex to ensure that everyone gets the most out of the time they spend together."

Croatia holiday ”good value for money”

0

More than 7,000 Brits visited Croatia between January and MarchA holiday to Croatia may be the best thing to do as the credit crunch hits wallets, as the country offers "good value for money", a spokesperson for Charisma PR has said.

The agency, which works on behalf of the Croatia Tourism Board, believes that the former Yugoslav nation "is very reasonable because it is outside the eurozone, so it”s still good value for money because the pound is not particularly strong against the euro at the moment".

In addition, the spokesperson said, visitors will enjoy Croatia because "the countryside is very beautiful and the beaches and the water are very clean".

According to official statistics, there were nearly 600,000 tourists in Croatia between January and March 2008 – up 14 per cent compared to the same period in 2007.

The number of foreign tourists increased by 30 per cent to 285,688 in the first quarter of 2008 and there were a little more than 7,000 tourists from the UK.

There were 1.5 million overseas visitors to New York last yearNew York City overtook Orlando and Las Vegas to capture the top spot in total tourism spending in the US last year, according to new research.

Figures from Global Insight, the financial analysis and forecasting firm, revealed that the influx of international visitors is driving growth in the Big Apple.

New York gained about 1.5 million overseas visitors last year and increased its share of total international visitors by 3.3 per cent in 2007.

Foreign visitors also pushed up Washington DC, Miami, Seattle and Santa Ana/Anaheim in the rankings.

"Exchange rate advantages, economic growth at home, and redoubled promotional efforts are behind this success," explained Christopher Pike, Tourism Principal at Global Insight.

Meanwhile, an expert has said that despite the credit crunch, Britons are sill taking holidays.

Bob Atkinson of travelsupermarket.com said: "Those [people] with budgets or those who have to be a bit more careful are still taking their main break."
