A wealth of artists and musicians from all over north Africa gather in the Malian city of Essakane for the ninth annual Festival au Desert.
From January 8th to 10th this festival has its roots in the culture of the indigenous nomadic Tuareg people.
It brings the desert alive with traditional rhythms and modern African sounds assembled together for a global audience.
The company behind the event also offers a range of organised tours so that the experience of the festival can be combined with taking in some of the sights and the sounds of this most spectacular part of the African continent.
As well as the event in Essakane visitors can take in Timbuktu, which is only two hours away, plus the beautiful Niger River and many other areas in the region.
Camel races, film screenings and conferences on themes related to the music and culture of the festival complete a rich line-up at one of the most intriguing events to be held in this mystical and vibrant part of Africa.
Mali is a former French colony which gained independence in 1960.
