Munich rolls up to one of the world”s largest tented festivals

0

Circus and cabaret are celebrated in fine style once again this year at the annual Winter Tollwood Festival in Munich.

Now in its twentieth year, the festival sees a variety of acts from all over the world descend on the huge tented village which springs up at the city”s Theresienwiese between November 26th and December 31st.

The event sees more than a million visitors drawn in every year, as it unravels is energetic and dynamic programme of performances, culinary delights and even a seasonal Christmas market.

Many local celebrities and old favourites are a key part of the appeal, as visitors from far and wide try to catch a glimpse of some famous faces.

On New Year”s Eve, the final crescendo of the festival celebrates the ringing out of the old year and the coming of the new with live bands, DJs and huge parties revelling long into the night.

Munich is also home to another of the biggest and best festivals in the world, Oktoberfest, which sees millions of people come to the city to drink copious amounts of beer, the export for which the area is probably most famous.

New Year”s resolutions tested to the limit in Berlin

0

For most people New Year”s Day consists of nothing more energetic than rolling out of bed at around lunchtime to watch the Sound of Music on television.

But for many residents of the German capital Berlin, the first day of the year is an opportunity to go for a run around some freezing streets, starting by the famous Brandenburg Gate in the heart of the city.

Each January 1st, the Berlin New Year Run sees plucky locals brave the winter air and their rotten hangovers to run around the four kilometre course, getting themselves in the spirit for the forthcoming year.

The race is seen as the second part of an event which straddles the passing of one year into the next, as even more runners gather elsewhere in the city at the Mommsenstadion to compete in the New Year”s Eve run, with competitors donning all manner of colourful costumes.

Sunseekers from all over the world gather for the ”first dawn”

0

While a number of countries and territories around the world maintain that they see the first dawn of the new year every January 1st, Millennium Island may well hold the most legitimate claim.

Situated in the Pacific Ocean as part of the island chain of Kiribati, which is one of the world”s smallest nations, Millennium Island expects to see the sun rise at approximately 5:45 on New Year”s Day 2009.

Thanks to a readjustment in the international date line in 1995, the island is now widely-thought to be the first place to see the sun rise every new year.

Also known as Caroline Island, Millennium Island was a British colony until 1979, when the nation of Kiribati declared its independence.

Sitting only six metres above sea level, many environmentalists fear the island will soon fall victim to rising sea levels, perhaps as early as 2025 – so those wishing to see the first dawn of the year might be wise to start planning their trip sooner rather than later.

New Year kicks off in style in Vienna

0

After the celebrations of the night before have rung out the old year in style, Vienna begins the new year with one of the most famous and prestigious classical concerts in the world.

Vienna”s New Year”s Day Concert at the Musikverein”s jaw-droppingly beautiful Golden Hall features some of the best-loved music from the Strauss family of composers.

As might be expected of an event with such a huge amount of prestige, tickets are like gold dust and the application process sees them allocated by ballot.

To give music fans a chance to experience the majesty of the surroundings, additional concerts are also held on the two nights before the main event.

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will be in residence for the performances, which should feature some of the most famous and admired work from the history of classical music in Austria.

The event is to be televised in over 50 countries and it is seen as the mission of the concerts to fulfil an ambassadorial role in promoting Austrian music and culture the world over.

Cult film honoured in European car rally

0

One of the most-loved films in British cinematic history is to be honoured once again this year with an ingenious charity event.

Channelling the appeal of the cult classic, The Italian Job is a Mini Cooper rally starting at Imola in Italy on October 24th with its final destination in Brighton on November 1st.

On the way, participants are to pick up loads of great local wine, which will then be auctioned off in the UK with the proceeds going to a number of children”s charities.

Conceived by car fanatic and film buff Freddie St George in 1990, what was initially intended as a one-off event has been going the best part of two decades and has so far raised in excess of £2 million for good causes.

The event attracts teams from all over the world, with the only criteria for entry being that they have to compete in a Mini Cooper or another classic car from the film.

So far it”s unclear whether anyone rich enough to own an example of the vintage Lamborghini from the opening credit sequence in the Alps has yet taken part.

The Italian Job starred Michael Caine and Noel Coward and was released in 1969. It was later remade in 2003 and featured the acting talent of Mark Wahlberg.

Chicago musical tickets: Get ‘em while they’re (red) hot!

0

I was thrilled last weekend when my friend snagged some discount Chicago tickets—I have wanted to experience ‘London’s sexiest musical’ for ages.

chicago cambridge theatre

Contrary to the widely held sentiment among theatregoers that long-running West End musicals can become overpriced tourists traps, I was highly impressed: I definitely got my money’s worth. I know that musical backwards and forwards—the songs, the scenes, and even the first two minutes of the opening dance number (sad, I know)—and I was on the edge of my seat for the entire show. continue reading

Powerboat rally to leave excitement in its wake

0

Racing across the open water, barely in contact with the surface and risking life and limb all for sporting glory used to be the preserve of a select band of foolhardy thrill-seekers.

But not any more, as the Red Sea RIB Rally 2008 proves, set against the backdrop of the beautiful destination of Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.

Competitors looking to pit their powerboating skills against a field of all comers can assemble a team of four and book a package that includes flights, accommodation and fully-supported use of a top of the range boat.

Each craft is identical to those used by the other teams, irrespective of whether competitors are professionals or amateurs, so as to keep as even a playing field as possible.

The best part is that the top prize is the boat that the winning team used in the race, meaning that the victorious team will get their hands on thousands of pounds worth of aquatic technology.

The F1 Powerboating Championship is a professional powerboating competition, with a structure modelled on that of the F1 motor racing equivalent, which began in 1981 and has been dominated by a number of top racers from Italy for over the last decade.
