The Italian Dolomites will be treated to one of the world’s top cross-country skiing events again this year.
From January 22nd to 25th in the Province of Trento, the Marcialonga covers 70 kilometres of terrain and will draw hardy spectators and valiant competitors alike.
The main attraction is flanked by a number of smaller events, such as the Minimarcialonga for younger competitors and the Lavazeloppet, an open-entry short-course event.
This year’s male and female champions will each scoop €5,000 each, with a range of other prizes available down the ranking and across the different disciplines.
The event, which will take place for the 36th time in 2009, makes use of the latest equipment with each racer having a sophisticated timing chip embedded into their outfit.
Last year’s male winner was Anders Aukland, in a time of three hours, nine minutes and 32.7 seconds.
The Marcialonga organisation doesn’t just cover snowy pursuits: there is also a cycling event which takes place in May and a run in September.
