Early in 2009 the Hong Kong marathon will once again see some of the world’s top runners and a large number of eager amateurs make their way around some of the spectacular sights of this top destination.
Visitors on Hong Kong tours will join the many thousands who line the route, which begins on Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon Peninsula and ends up in Victoria Park on Hong Kong Island.
While the main race kicks off at 08:00 there are number of other events which will see a very early start for competitors, such as the Half Marathon Challenge which begins at 06:50 and the 10km Challenge, which starts at the highly unsociable hour of 05:15.
The event began in 1997, when the course took runners from Sheung Shiu in Hong Kong to Shenzhen in China, crossing the border as a symbol marking the return of the territory’s sovereignty to China after 99 years in British hands.
