Hong Kong races to see plenty of action

0

One of the premier highlights on the worldwide horseracing calendar will return to Hong Kong this month, which is due to be televised to audiences all around the world.

On December 14th Sha Tin Racecourse will host the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races, the latest instalment in the proud history of this classic event.

This meeting is one of the biggest and richest of its kind anywhere in the world and over the years has acted as a beacon for the sport in Asia, playing an important part in its growing popularity among spectators and visitors on Hong Kong tours alike.

Last year, crowd favourite Frankie Dettori rode to victory on Ramonti in the HKD$20 million Hong Kong Cup – the top race at the event – and celebrated the win with his trademark leap out of the horses’ saddle.

Frankie Dettori is one of the most popular and successful jockeys in the modern era, having completed some historic feats such as winning each of the seven races in a single day at the prestigious Ascot racecourse.ADNFCR-1652-ID-18917261-ADNFCR

HK has a flutter on god’s birthday

0

The whole of Hong Kong will come together to celebrate a rather unusual event on January 27th next year.

Festivities will be held across the city to celebrate the birthday of Che Kung, who gamblers believe will give them good luck in their speculative activities.

Che Kung was an army general during the Sung dynasty who, in the years following his death, came to be seen as a god among the Taoist people of the region after his bravery in defeating a potentially deadly plague.

The temple dedicated to his memory is located near the Sha Tin Racecourse, one of the most important in Asia, which leads some to believe he will grant them good luck when placing a bet.

On Che Kung’s birthday, many people gather at his temple to pay their respects, often in the hope of receiving good luck the next time they have a flutter on the horses.

Visitors on Hong Kong tours might want to consider having a cheeky dabble on a race while in the city when asking for some spiritual assistance.ADNFCR-1652-ID-18917251-ADNFCR

Revellers set to Zouk Out in Singapore

0

One of the world’s biggest and best dance music parties will return to Singapore on December 13th.

The stunning Siloso Beach on Sentosa Island, located at the southern tip of Singapore, is the setting for the annual ZoukOut festival.

Kicking off at 18:30 and continuing until 08:00 local time the next morning, this epic event is set to attract partygoers from across the world.

The roster of DJs and special guests reads like a who’s who of the international dance music scene, with the likes of Sasha, DJ Yoda, Dimitri from Paris and the legendary Erol Alkan all due to get the crowd on its feet.

Visitors on Singapore tours should make this year’s event an essential experience while in the city and those making a visit at any time would be well advised to hit the Zouk club for an unforgettable evening.

Last year’s Zouk Out won the award for Best Leisure Event Experience at the 2008 Singapore Tourism Awards in March, with the Zouk Club also scooping Best Nightspot Experience.ADNFCR-1652-ID-18917248-ADNFCR

New York, New Year in Times Square

0

The heart of downtown Manhattan, Times Square is the center of the cultural and social life of the city – making it an appropriate location for the one of the biggest and most famous new year’s celebrations on Earth.

On December 31st the iconic spot will see hundreds of thousands of revellers of all ages gather to enjoy the last moments of 2008 and usher in 2009.

While all the usual accoutrements of the passing of one year to the next are observed – not least a rousing chorus of Auld Lang Syne – the most well-known tradition is one unique to the city: the dropping of the ball at One Times Square, which marks the stroke of midnight.

Bars, restaurants and hotels around the area will be packed out with happy partygoers, with some of the more high-rise establishments offering some very special deals and exclusive views of the evening’s proceedings.

Visitors to the Big Apple enjoying one of the many New York tours on offer over the festive period should consider making Times Square their party point of choice on New Year’s Eve.

Dubai works up a sweat over a marathon distance

0

As if it wasn’t hot enough, Dubai will see thousands of fit and lively people run themselves into oblivion at its annual marathon early next year, which is fast becoming a highlight on the world distance running calendar.

Of course, the January 16th timing of the race means the conditions are about as comfortable as they could be and the many professional and amateur runners who are set to take part will be hoping to use this to their advantage.

The course will send competitors clockwise around the city, taking in such famous sights as the World Trade Centre.

Big news for the forthcoming event is that world marathon record holder and reigning event champion Haile Gebrselassie will be competing again in 2009.

Gebrselassie recently became the first man to run under two hours four minutes at the Berling Marathon and will no doubt draw a huge crowd of visitors on Dubai tours, interested to see if he can better his remarkable achievement.

Kings of Leon hit London

0

Whiskey-soaked, Bible-reading familial rockers the Kings of Leon will storm their way into London’s Wembley Arena on December 22nd.

The Followill clan (three brothers, Caleb, Nathan and Jared, with one cousin, Matthew) hail from Tennessee in the deep south of the US – and look to their country roots and rock ‘n’ roll sensibility to inform their heavy riffing, electrically-charged sound.

Kings of Leon’s current tour will see them play dates all over the country before one last triumphant night in London before embarking on a US leg.

The success of their first three albums saw their star steadily rise and now, with the arrival of their fourth LP, the band are ready to conquer the world as they descend on one of the capital’s finest concert venues to play to thousands of baying fans.

Visitors to the city taking in one of a selection of London tours should definitely consider seeing this most exciting band live, as it promises to be a memorable experience.

‘Technology is a must’ for UK travellers

0

Britons travelling abroad are now demanding technological and electronic facilities in their accommodation, it has been suggested.

Hotels with wi-fi and chargers for devices such as iPods and mobile phones are becoming both more commonplace and more expected, according to an industry expert.

Travelsupermarket’s Bob Atkinson says that the type of thing that holidaymakers demand of their accommodation is changing.

"People are now expecting [technology to be supplied,] because as soon as you get to the point where a provider somewhere is giving you that kind of service, when you go away you expect to have it."

Mr Atkinson also suggests that hotels that offer a higher level of this kind of service could mark themselves out from the competition.

"Good hotels will carry that kind of thing because that’s the kind of thing that makes a difference."

According to a recent study by Ofcom, there are 26 broadband connections for every 100 people in the UK.

Ground-breaking hotel concept comes to Paris

0

The innovative rooftop hotel pod concept Everland has arrived in the French capital, atop the Palais de Tokyo, where it will remain until April 2009.

Originally built for the 2002 Swiss Expo and having worked its way through Switzerland and Germany, the one-room hotel is in effect an art installation with a rather practical use.

The brainchild of Swiss design duo L/B, this is a futuristic meld of architecture, art and interior design, which takes the shape of a mobile hotel suite which can be theoretically be placed anywhere in a city environment and transported elsewhere at short notice.

Interactivity is a key theme too, as guests are invited to collaborate in the ever-changing nature of the design, such as by adding to the record collection or leaving a message in the guestbook.

The suite features a king-size bed, lounge with fully-stocked mini-bar, bathroom – and, of course, the breathtaking views of the City of Lights.

Guests also receive a breakfast delivery in the morning, but anyone planning on a lengthy sojourn will be disappointed – stays are for one night only.

Paris – Enjoy the view from the Eiffel Tower or see the Mona Lisa in the "city of light".ADNFCR-1652-ID-18906418-ADNFCR
