Global running series to which only the super-fit need apply

0

There are marathons, there are Iron Man contests – and there is the Asics Eternal Running series.

On December 6th, Buenos Aires in Argentina plays host to the South American leg of this global racing series in which competitors are faced not only with a 12km circuit but a series of obstacles along the way.

Every 700m along the course, runners have to negotiate a variety of challenges, from cargo nets, inflatable barriers and all manner of other hindrances to their progress.

Having already completed stages in across the world in destinations such as Australia and Miami, the Argentinean event is the latest step in an event that grows in popularity every year.

Along with the main event, spectators will be kept entertained by the imaginative fancy dress on display and a variety of music playing along the way, as the course winds through some of the city”s most historic avenues and squares.

Cult film honoured in European car rally

0

One of the most-loved films in British cinematic history is to be honoured once again this year with an ingenious charity event.

Channelling the appeal of the cult classic, The Italian Job is a Mini Cooper rally starting at Imola in Italy on October 24th with its final destination in Brighton on November 1st.

On the way, participants are to pick up loads of great local wine, which will then be auctioned off in the UK with the proceeds going to a number of children”s charities.

Conceived by car fanatic and film buff Freddie St George in 1990, what was initially intended as a one-off event has been going the best part of two decades and has so far raised in excess of £2 million for good causes.

The event attracts teams from all over the world, with the only criteria for entry being that they have to compete in a Mini Cooper or another classic car from the film.

So far it”s unclear whether anyone rich enough to own an example of the vintage Lamborghini from the opening credit sequence in the Alps has yet taken part.

The Italian Job starred Michael Caine and Noel Coward and was released in 1969. It was later remade in 2003 and featured the acting talent of Mark Wahlberg.

Powerboat rally to leave excitement in its wake

0

Racing across the open water, barely in contact with the surface and risking life and limb all for sporting glory used to be the preserve of a select band of foolhardy thrill-seekers.

But not any more, as the Red Sea RIB Rally 2008 proves, set against the backdrop of the beautiful destination of Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.

Competitors looking to pit their powerboating skills against a field of all comers can assemble a team of four and book a package that includes flights, accommodation and fully-supported use of a top of the range boat.

Each craft is identical to those used by the other teams, irrespective of whether competitors are professionals or amateurs, so as to keep as even a playing field as possible.

The best part is that the top prize is the boat that the winning team used in the race, meaning that the victorious team will get their hands on thousands of pounds worth of aquatic technology.

The F1 Powerboating Championship is a professional powerboating competition, with a structure modelled on that of the F1 motor racing equivalent, which began in 1981 and has been dominated by a number of top racers from Italy for over the last decade.

Long-distance running takes it easy for a change

0

The popular coastal resort of Negril, Jamaica becomes a little more energetic than usual with the arrival of the Reggae Marathon on December 6th.

One of the lesser known, but probably most beautiful long-distance running courses in the world, this event sees competitors race either the half or full marathon distance alongside some of the most picturesque scenery the island nation has to offer.

Of course, this being Jamaica the soulful sounds of reggae music are never too far away, with runners just as likely to find themselves motivated by the laid-back grooves of Bob Marley and The Wailers than encouraging shouts of support from the crowd.

Another major difference between this race and its fellow events in London, New York or Berlin is the pre-drawn parade of drum-wielding Rastafarians who chant traditional blessings to encourage those competing later in the day.

But much more than just a race, the event really becomes a festival with a Marathon Expo showcasing local artisan products held over the race weekend and all kinds of traditional food and drink on offer to keep spectators entertained before and after the event.

Jamaica attracts more then one million visitors each year, who come to enjoy the beautiful coastlines, lush rainforests and local culture – making tourism the number one industry on the island.

Gastronomic world descends on playground of rich and famous

0

A destination that will forever be associated with the finer things in life, Monte Carlo will host is annual Gastronomic Fair once again from November 28th to December 1st.

For the last twelve years the fair has brought some of the world”s finest culinary figures and gastronomic products to this glamorous destination and 2008 promises to be no different.

Each year”s event has a different theme and with this year”s being herbs and spices the fair looks set to be as fragrant as ever.

The proceedings are given a competitive edge as the creative powers of the assembled chefs are challenged.

This year they will be required to create an original work in chocolate and have been told they must draw their inspiration from the female form.

As if visitors needed more of an incentive to this jewel in the French Riviera, the Monte Carlo Gastronomic Fair promises to delight the senses more than ever before.

The principality of Monaco, of which Monte Carlo is the capital, is one of the world”s smallest countries by area but it also one of the most densely-populated.

It is renowned for its resident”s personal wealth as many rich individuals from bankers to Formula One racing drivers call it home, lured by its reputation as a tax haven.

Sunrise festivals highlights architectural inspiration

0

The engineering feats of ancient Egypt are something to behold and few are more spectacular than the 3,000 year-old temple at Abu Simbel, built by Ramses the Great.

Egypt”s pharaohs were not known for their modesty and Ramses the Great was perhaps the most egotistical of all. He commissioned the temple at Abu Simbel to be so aligned that the inner sanctum of the temple would only be illuminated by sunlight twice a year: once on his birthday and once on the anniversary of his accession to power.

As if this wasn”t a sufficient demonstration of the skill of ancient Egyptian architects, the statue of the god of darkness Ptah is so positioned as to be left in the shade during the illumination.

The Abu Simbel Festival sees thousands of people gather in and around the temple at sunrise to see this incredible congregation of natural beauty, human precision and royal pomposity, before joining in the celebrations that take place throughout the event.

Were he alive today, Ramses himself might be more than a little dismayed in seeing that the temple has been moved from its original site after the area was flooded to make way the waters of Lake Nasser, meaning the sun now works its unique magic over the temple slightly later in the day than in ancient times.

Glasgow is the UK”s finest

0

Glasgow is the top city in the United Kingdom for tourists, it has emerged.

The largest city in Scotland, Glasgow was adjudged to be one of the world”s best destinations, ranked on a par with Chicago, Mexico City and Lisbon and as the best the UK has to offer.

The newly-published Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2009 guide sets out to repudiate any misconceptions visitors may have about the city.

"Forget about castles, kilts, bagpipes and tartan," it declares, "you come for the cocktails, cuisine and designer chic (plus the legendary native wit)".

The guide said the ranking came as a result of the city”s "worldwide reputation for tourism, big events, shopping and having a good time" as being the reason for its inclusion.

Glasgow has rich cultural heritage to be proud of. World-renowned artist and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh is one of Glasgow”s most famous sons and was influential in the development of the European Art Nouveau movement at the turn of the 20th century.
